Year 5 Letters

Dear Parents,

I am writing to you as safeguarding lead following several concerns over children’s on-line habits and internet use.

Many children are using apps/games and forums in order to upload content and to chat with each other, particularly Roblox, Fortnite and TikTok. It may be that this use is largely harmless however I have recently seen content that is worrying - some of our children are posting sexualised content, swear words or insults to each other. We take online safety very seriously as you know and do educate the children on the responsible use of the internet and how to keep themselves safe. It does seem as though this is not working very well in the case of groups of children in year 5 particularly. We would ask for your help in ensuring that you know what your children are accessing online and what they are able to upload. Some apps are open to abuse and I’m sure you’ve heard on the news this week about the vulnerability of young girls in posting content that becomes public without their knowledge or permission. Some of our girls are applying make-up and posting videos of themselves singing songs with explicit lyrics. Some boys are also using groups in Fortnite to insult each other during gameplay.

I am including some recent research regarding TikTok for your information:

In the recent months, Check Point Research teams discovered multiple vulnerabilities within the TikTok application. The vulnerabilities described in this research allow attackers to do the following:

  • Get a hold of TikTok accounts and manipulate their content
  • Delete videos
  • Upload unauthorized videos
  • Make private “hidden” videos public
  • Reveal personal information saved on the account such as private email addresses

If you have any questions or concerns, or can think of any way we can work together to keep our children safe, please speak to me, either of the class teachers or Mr Thorne (esafety lead).

Thank you for your help in this matter,

Ms Alcock

The school is very excited to advise you of the opportunities for your child to participate in school trips/visitors during this academic year 2019/20.
