Homework and Reading in Key Stage 1

Dear Parents/Carers,

We have recently reviewed how homework is being set throughout the key stage in order to ensure there is consistency and progression. We know that homework can be stressful for some children and adults and we hope that by working together, we can eliminate any problems which may arise.  As a result, after half term, all children in Key Stage 1 will be set the following homework.

  • Maths/Phonics homework- this could be an online piece of work or a sheet of questions to consolidate what has been taught in class. Year 2 will be set maths homework weekly. Year 1 will alternate this with a piece of phonics homework.
  • Spellings- these are key words which your child will need to be able to read and spell and are tested weekly in class.
  • Reading aloud  - we ask that you listen to your child read five times a week, for no longer than ten minutes and record this in their diaries. This can also be done on Bug Club https://activelearnprimary.co.uk/start

When your child has read 10 times they will earn a reading star. Every time they earn 5 reading stars (50 reads) they will be awarded a certificate and a new book to take home.

  • Phonics sounds – Year 1 children will be given a set of phonics sounds to practise. Please practise these daily for 5 minutes. The easiest way to do this is to flash the card and children say the sounds.

            How can you help?

We ask that you listen to your child read and record what they have read in their reading record.

To help ease the stress of reading at home, each year group will have a day where you can come into class early and read with your child. This will be from 8:30 until the bell. Year 1 will be on a Wednesday and Year 2 will be a Thursday.

If your child is not completing homework or reading regularly at home then they will have lunchtime homework club with Ms Darby and Miss Alcock.

Please see your class teacher if you have any questions or concerns,

Thank you for your cooperation with this.

Miss Whitwham
