What is PSHE/ RSE?

PSHE stands for Personal, Social, Health and Economic education and often includes Citizenship. RSE stands for Relationships and Sex Education.

Together,PSHE  & RSE support pupils to understand themselves, their relationships with others and the world around them. Through this learning, pupils develop the knowledge and skills needed to build healthy relationships, care for physical and mental wellbeing, understand their role in society and stay safe in a range of situations, including online.

Intent

At Eastover Primary School, we aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead healthy, safe and happy lives. Through our PSHE and RSE curriculum, we encourage children to develop positive relationships, build resilience, value diversity and become responsible, respectful members of society.

We strive to create a nurturing and inclusive environment where pupils feel safe to discuss sensitive issues, ask questions and express their views. Our curriculum supports children's personal, social, emotional and physical development, enabling them to understand how to keep themselves safe, make informed choices and prepare for life in modern Britain.

Implementation

PSHE and RSE are taught through a carefully planned and progressive curriculum that builds knowledge and skills year upon year. Lessons are delivered through dedicated PSHE sessions as well as being reinforced through assemblies, themed events, enrichment activities and the wider school ethos.

Teaching covers a range of age-appropriate themes including:

• Mental health and emotional wellbeing
• Friendships and positive relationships
• Respect and diversity
• Online safety
• Physical health and healthy lifestyles
• Keeping safe and managing risk
• Relationships and family life
• Growing and changing
• Citizenship and British Values

Lessons use discussion, role play, stories and real-life scenarios to encourage participation and reflection. Staff create a safe and supportive learning environment where children's questions are valued and handled sensitively.

Impact

As a result of our PSHE and RSE curriculum, pupils become confident, respectful and resilient individuals who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond primary school.

Children demonstrate:

• Positive attitudes towards themselves and others
• An understanding of healthy and respectful relationships
• Increased confidence in managing emotions and wellbeing
• The ability to recognise and manage risks, including online
• Respect for diversity and inclusion
• Knowledge of how and where to seek help when needed

Our pupils leave Eastover equipped with the skills, values and knowledge needed to make positive choices, contribute to their communities and thrive as responsible citizens.

PSHE/ RSE and Oracy 

PSHE/ RSE helps pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to become healthy, responsible and active members of society. Through learning about relationships, wellbeing, citizenship and financial education, children gain an understanding of democracy, laws and their role in the community. They are encouraged to think critically, make informed decisions, build resilience and respect others.

Through PSHE/ RSE and oracy, we want our children to:

• Ask thoughtful questions
• Make reasoned arguments
• Be curious and eager to learn
• Show respect for themselves and others
• Develop a strong sense of identity and belonging
• Understand their role in society
• Engage with political and social issues with confidence and curiosity.

At Eastover School we follow Kapow for the delivery of our PSHE/ RSE lessons. These are kept up to date to follow alongside the changes to the curriculum starting in September 2026
