At Eastover Primary School, everyone is a scientist.
Our aim is to provide every child with a broad, balanced and engaging science curriculum that inspires curiosity and develops a deeper understanding of the world around them. We encourage children to explore, investigate and discover through meaningful scientific experiences, helping them to become confident learners who ask questions and seek answers.
We want our children to develop a genuine love of science and to believe that there are no limits to their aspirations. Whether they dream of becoming astronauts, forensic scientists, toxicologists, microbiologists or pursuing any other scientific career. We aim to nurture their ambitions and show them the exciting possibilities that science can offer.
Through exciting, practical and hands-on learning experiences, we foster curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. We want children to leave Eastover with lasting memories of their science learning, a strong understanding of scientific concepts and a lifelong enthusiasm for discovery.
Our carefully planned and sequenced curriculum has been designed with the needs of every child at its heart. It enables pupils to build and develop their scientific knowledge, skills and vocabulary progressively throughout their time at school. We ensure that children not only meet the requirements of the National Curriculum but are also equipped with the knowledge, confidence and resilience needed for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
By promoting enquiry, investigation and a thirst for learning, we strive to develop scientifically literate young people who are ready to understand and contribute to the world around them.
Oracy in Science
As scientists, pupils will demonstrate a curiosity about the world around them and ask questions about the things they see and experience in their everyday life. They will consider how science affects their everyday life and what their impact as a person will be on the world around them.
Through Oracy, children should be able to discuss their ideas and listen to others. Ask questions about scientific phenomena and be able to explain their findings in a clear and concise manner.
By the end of KS1, children should be curious and ask questions about what they notice. They should be exposed to different types of enquiry types to develop their own understanding in order to answer questions. They should be able to use simple scientific language to talk about what they have found out.
By the end of KS2, pupils should have a deeper understanding of enquiry types and be able to choose their own to explore scientific ideas. Children should reason their understanding using evidence to explain to others. They should also be able to read, spell and pronounce complex scientific vocabulary correctly.
