Intent

At Eastover Primary School, our intent for the teaching of maths is to help children understand that it is an essential tool for everyday life, a foundation for understanding the world, and a critical driver of logical reasoning and problem-solving. At Eastover, we believe that every child can succeed in maths. Our intent is to foster a lifelong curiosity, confidence, and enjoyment of the subject. We want children to leave our school not just with mathematical fluency, but with a deep, conceptual understanding that allows them to apply their skills across other subjects and within real-world contexts.

Implementation

Unitisation (the comprehension of the value of each number) is taught carefully and methodically from the very first day of school. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to take children on a journey from concrete, physical experiences to abstract mathematical thinking:

  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS): Mathematics begins with the early acquisition of number through purposeful play and the hands-on counting of physical items. Children explore patterns, shapes, and spatial relationships by manipulating real-world objects, building a strong physical sense of quantity before any formal symbols are introduced.

  • Key Stage 1 (KS1) to Key Stage 2 (KS2): As children progress, they move from these concrete experiences to pictorial representations, and finally to abstract questions. For older children to solve complex problems, they must develop a clear mental image of number and unitisation (the ability to see a group of objects as a single unit, such as seeing one pack of ten juice boxes as "one ten").

To ensure a deep and lasting understanding of mathematics, our curriculum embeds structured approaches and key statutory milestones at specific stages of a child's education:

EYFS -> Play & Concrete Counting

KS1 -> Mastering Number Programme (Subitising & Cardinality)

Yr 2 -> Repeated Addition ──> Times Tables Introduced (Summer Term)

Yr 4 -> Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) 

Yr 6-> SATs Preparation (Fluency, Reasoning & Problem-Solving)

Mastering Number Programme

To secure firm foundations, we utilise the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics) Mastering Number Programme in Key Stage 1. This project focuses on developing good number sense, subitising (the ability to instantly recognise the number of objects in a small group without counting), and a deep understanding of composition and cardinality. Looking ahead, we are actively planning the future implementation of this mastery approach into Key Stage 2 to ensure consistency and to deeply embed these core arithmetic skills as children grow.

Multiplication and the MTC

Times tables are a crucial building block for mathematical fluency. We introduce multiplication tables in the Summer term of Year 2, but only after children have spent significant time mastering the concept of repeated addition (e.g., understanding that 2 + 2 + 2 is three groups of two).

This foundation is continually built upon throughout Key Stage 2. A major milestone in this journey is the statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) in Year 4 in June. The MTC is a digital assessment designed to determine whether children can fluently recall their times tables up to 12 times 12. Ensuring automaticity by the end of Year 4 frees up working memory, allowing children to focus on more complex fractional and algebraic concepts later on.

Key Stage 2 Outcomes and SATs

All of these skills—from early subitising to rapid times table recall—culminate in Year 6. The preparation of these fundamental skills throughout their school journey ensures that children approach the Key Stage 2 SATs with confidence. Our ultimate goal is for Year 6 children to have a robust toolkit of mathematical fluency, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills, leaving them fully prepared for the challenges of secondary school mathematics and beyond.

Impact

The ultimate measure of our mathematics curriculum is the lasting impact it leaves on our pupils long after they leave us. Mathematics is not just a school subject; it is a fundamental life skill that shapes how our children navigate, understand, and contribute to the world around them.

1. Mathematical Independence in Everyday Life

First and foremost, the deep, conceptual understanding developed from EYFS to Year 6 equips children with practical everyday fluency. Because they understand unitisation, fractions, and percentages deeply rather than just memorising rules, they grow into financially literate adults. They will be able to manage personal budgets, understand interest rates, interpret data in the media, and make informed, analytical decisions in their daily lives.

2. Cognitive Resilience and Critical Thinking

The journey through a mastery curriculum teaches children that making mistakes is a vital part of learning. By tackling complex, abstract problems in Key Stage 2, children develop cognitive resilience—the grit to persevere when a solution isn't immediately obvious. They learn to think logically, break down large problems into manageable steps, and challenge assumptions. This systematic approach to problem-solving is a highly transferable skill that applies to any challenge they will face in the future.

3. Opening Doors to Future Careers

We are preparing children for a rapidly evolving, data-driven world. A strong primary foundation in mathematics opens the doors to a vast array of future academic and career pathways. Whether they eventually pursue fields directly linked to mathematics—such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths), coding, finance, and data science—or fields like design, construction, and medicine, their primary maths education serves as the bedrock of their technical capability.

4. Mathematical Self-Belief

By ensuring every child experiences success through a structured, supportive mastery approach, we eliminate the damaging myth of the "maths person." The profound impact of this is confidence. Our children transition to secondary school with a positive mathematical mindset, free from the anxiety that often paralyses learners. They leave us believing that with effort and the right strategies, they can master complex concepts—a mindset that fosters lifelong learning.

Our Ultimate Vision

We do not just teach mathematics to help children pass exams. The true impact of our curriculum is that our pupils leave primary school as confident, mathematically curious, and analytical thinkers who possess the skills and self-belief to thrive in secondary education and successfully shape their own futures.

Maths and Oracy

Our classrooms are rich with mathematical discussion, and we maintain exceptionally high expectations for how children communicate their thinking.

  • The Power of Full Sentences: We discourage one-word answers. Instead, we explicitly teach and encourage children to speak in full, grammatically correct sentences. For example, rather than a child simply saying "twelve" when identifying a shape's properties, we expect: "The cube has twelve edges." This practice helps children internalise the structure of mathematical arguments and builds clarity.

  • Precision Vocabulary: We do not simplify mathematical language. From the earliest years, children are introduced to, and expected to use, precise vocabulary. We replace vague words like "top number" or "borrowing" with accurate terms like numerator, denominator, regrouping, and commutative property. Speaking like mathematicians allows children to categorise their thoughts accurately and prevents misconceptions later in their education.
