Year 3 Spring Curriculum Letter
We hope you all had a lovely Christmas break. In Lions you will find Mrs Larson, Mrs Hoppins, Mrs Searle, Miss Hoare and Mr Adams and in Tigers Mrs Lukins, Mrs Weall, Mrs Addicott, Miss Godden and Miss Warren. If you have any concerns feel free to catch us either before or after school.
Children do not need to come into class before school.
Your child may wish to have a snack at break and we encourage them to have a healthy one. No sweets please. Also ensure your child has a water bottle for class and separate drink in their lunchbox.
Our maths focus for this term is multiplication and division. Later on we will focus on fractions. Children will continue to learn their times tables (3x, 4x, 8x, 6x and 11x) to ensure they are confident. They will do weekly tables tests to earn their times table wrist bands. Maths homework will be to practise times tables at home. See below for a useful link.
We will read, learn and write our own Greek myths linked to our Ancient Greece topic. We will explore the features of a newspaper report and create our own reports. Later in the term, Year 3 will use their most persuasive vocabulary in writing to persuade their audience that school uniform should be banned! Lastly, the Spring term will end with the children practising poetry by reading aloud and performing it to an audience. This will develop their confidence not only in writing poetry but also in reading out loud to an audience. Guided reading and SPaG will take place daily in small groups. Children will continue to work through the 9 common exception word cards which they need to be able to read and spell (these will be sent home).
In RE the children will explore what it means to belong to a religion and will learn about the religion of Judaism.
Art and DT
We will explore sculpture by studying how buildings are designed and why they are effective. Also, we will make, design and evaluate Greek pots.
Reading and Spelling
Book bags must be brought in each day. We encourage children to read and learn the spelling words every night. They will be rewarded for their hard work so please write a comment in their reading record books (and sign every day). Books not handed in, or signed, will be recorded as the child having not read.
Children will develop their programming skills through the program Scratch and will use the multimedia program Book Creator to present their work.
We will learn about how the Ancient Greeks lived and study the Greek Gods and Goddesses. The children will be visited by Mr Pig the storyteller where they will join in with singing and group drama work to further their knowledge of this topic. After half term we will explore compasses and take part in a workshop about how to use them correctly.
This term the children will develop their knowledge and explore light and shadow. They will also learn parts of the plant and their functions.
Full PE kit is required to be in school all week as there may be changes to the timetable. Children will have PE with Mr Irish on Wednesdays.
