English as an Additional Language

Welcome to Our EAL Page

Mrs Lynsey Irish is our EAL Coordinator and Mrs Yvonne Burton is our EAL teaching assistant. Mrs Irish organises the children’s learning and checks that all our children who speak English as an additional language are making progress. Mrs Burton works with the children every week to teach them English vocabulary and grammar. Mrs Burton does this in a range of ways including fun games and lots of discussion! We greatly value the languages of all the children at Eastover Primary and enjoy celebrating the diversity of languages we now have.

We have lots of super resources at Eastover Primary to support the children that speak English as an additional language including a wide range of dual language books, other dual language resources and talking pens. The talking pens will interact with the resources in the child’s first language and we can also record the child’s speech.

GOLD!

At the start of December 2018, representatives from the EAL Academy visited the school to review our provision for pupils for whom English is not their first language.

The EAL Academy reviews three key areas within schools and assigns an EAL quality mark with bronze, silver or gold status.

The key areas for review were ‘Leadership and management’, ‘Teaching, learning and assessment’ and ‘Working with parents in the community’.

Mrs. Irish and Mrs. Burton spent a day with the representatives to provide them with the information that they required, and they were impressed with what they saw.

We are pleased to announce that the school has been awarded the “Gold” quality mark which is the highest achievement possible. We are now the highest rated school for ‘English as an Additional Language’ in the south-west of England and the only school in the area with a gold award.
